The Wrestler is a 2008 sports drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky, written by Robert D. Siegel and starring Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood. Production began in January 2008 and Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired rights to distribute the film in the U.S.
His sense of identity fading into nothingness after the spotlights dim and he experiences a close brush with mortality, a retired wrestler begins to evaluate his life while considering the comeback that could very well kill him in director Darren Aronofskys poignant portrait of an introspective former superstar in the twilight of his career. Back in his heyday, Randy The Ram Robinson , a 1980s-era pro wrestler was an icon in the ring. His image immortalized in action figures and video games, he would headline arenas across the globe. Twenty years later, those glory days have passed. He has become a burnt-out shell of his former self. Randy is forced to earn his keep by brawling before handfuls of fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. After he has a heart attack during a small-time match, a doctor tells him he could die if he fights again. In an effort to build a new life, Robinson takes a job at a deli and making an effort to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, Stephanie . Yet, despite Randys continued attempts at convincing local stripper Cassidy to settle down with him in his humble trailer, the ring still calls to him. But the prospect of a rematch with his old nemesis, the Ayatollah , proves too tempting to resist, even if it means risking his life.
The film was released in a limited capacity on December 17, 2008 and was released nationwide on January 23, 2009. It was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on April 21, 2009 in the United States. It was released in the United Kingdom on June 1, 2009. Aronofsky considers The Wrestler to be a companion piece to his 2010 film, Black Swan, as both films feature a character with a demanding art.
The Wrestler has received universal critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes reported that 98% of critics gave the film positive write-ups based upon a sample of 215, and gave it a golden tomato for best drama of 2008. Alonso Duralde, of MSNBC, said, Rourkes work transcends mere stunt-casting; his performance is a howl of pain that seems to come from a very real place. Todd McCarthy, of Variety, said, Rourke creates a galvanizing, humorous, deeply moving portrait that instantly takes its place among the great, iconic screen performances. Ben Mankiewicz, from At the Movies, said, To put it simply, this is the best film Ive seen this year.
The film received universal critical acclaim and won the Golden Lion Award in the 2008 Venice Film Festival in August, where it premiered. For his role, Mickey Rourke went on to receive a BAFTA award, a Golden Globe award, an Independent Spirit Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Tomei also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.
